OM
When I first started practicing yoga I wasn't sure why we were asked to chant OM. Now as a yoga teacher I know some students are a little hesitant to chant and I think that's fair, especially if you aren't sure what you're chanting.
Here is how I explain OM to my students:
The entire universe is in a constant state of motion, creating a rhythmic vibration that ancient yogis recognized as the sound OM. You can hear it in the wind, a rushing river, the rustle of the leaves...you can hear it everywhere.
OM
is a beautiful, primal sound. It is one of the first sounds babies make. The sound OM is the union of mind, body, soul and the entire
universe compressed together into one powerful song.
Next time you are asked to chant OM, pronounce it A-U-M. Imagine the sound starting at the base of your spine and rising all the way up and out the top of your head. See if you can feel it's vibration and connect with it's power.
